Nintendo Switch 2 hits 2 million US sales, outpacing its legendary predecessor by 75 percent

The Nintendo Switch 2 is off to a blistering start in the United States, surpassing two million units sold life-to-date by the end of July 2025. This explosive second month on the market puts the new console’s sales pace a staggering 75 percent ahead of the original Nintendo Switch over the same launch period, establishing it as the best-selling console in the U.S. for the year so far in both units and dollars.

The impressive figures, from analytics firm Circana and shared by analyst Mat Piscatella, highlight the intense demand for Nintendo’s new hardware. The sales surge pushed U.S. video game hardware spending in July to $384 million, the highest for that month since July 2008. The Switch 2 has now officially outsold the PlayStation 5 in the U.S. for the year-to-date, a significant milestone for a console that launched in June. Last month, Piscatella noted the Switch 2 had “the biggest launch month sales for any new video game hardware platform” in U.S. history.

While the new hardware is flying off shelves, the software story shows some surprising nuance. The new exclusive Donkey Kong Bananza debuted at a strong No. 3 on the overall U.S. software charts for July. However, in a testament to the longevity of the original Switch’s library, sales for 2017’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the original console actually climbed to fourth place on Nintendo’s charts, outperforming the new Mario Kart World for the month. On the third-party front, CD Projekt revealed that Nintendo’s new console is a success for physical media, with 75.4 percent of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition’s sales on the platform being the physical cartridge version.
