MachineGames says it still has ‘a story to tell’ with a third Wolfenstein game

MachineGames, the studio behind the recently released Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, has confirmed its long-term plan to develop a third mainline Wolfenstein game to complete the modern saga of protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz. In a new documentary, the studio head revealed that the developer has “always seen this as a trilogy” and that the narrative arc was planned from the very beginning.

The confirmation comes from MachineGames studio head Jerk Gustafsson, who spoke about the franchise’s future in a Noclip documentary detailing the studio’s history. “That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for… what would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one,” Gustafsson said. He emphasized the team’s desire to return to the series, stating, “at least I hope—we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”

The last major entry in the series was 2017’s Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, though MachineGames later co-developed spinoffs like Wolfenstein: Youngblood. The studio’s focus has more recently been on its acclaimed Indiana Jones title, which just saw the release of its first DLC, The Order of the Giants. The potential for a new game also arrives as a Wolfenstein TV series is reportedly in development for Amazon’s Prime Video from the producers of the hit Fallout adaptation.

In the same documentary, developers shared a revealing anecdote about the studio’s audacious creative process, admitting they considered showing a full-frontal depiction of Adolf Hitler during a memorable scene in The New Colossus. The idea was eventually scrapped after a conversation with a Bethesda executive, with Gustafsson noting, “that was something that was a little bit too much, so we decided to skip that one.”
