Apple and Paramount double down on their hits, renewing The Morning Show and Tulsa King

In a strong show of confidence, Apple TV Plus and Paramount Plus have renewed two of their flagship series. Apple has picked up The Morning Show for a fifth season, with the announcement coming just as its fourth season premieres. Meanwhile, Paramount Plus has officially ordered a fourth season of Taylor Sheridan’s crime drama Tulsa King, which will see original showrunner Terence Winter return to a key creative role ahead of the show’s season three debut on September 21st.

The Morning Show scores an early vote of confidence

Apple isn’t waiting for the ratings to come in for season four of The Morning Show, which premiered on September 17th. The early renewal is a familiar move for the series and ensures that showrunner Charlotte Stoudt and director Mimi Leder will continue in their roles for the upcoming season.

Season four, which is set in early 2024, sees the cast joined by newcomers like Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and William Jackson Harper. According to Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV Plus, the show has been a “standout from the very start” and continues to “resonate with audiences worldwide.” In a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cherniss praised the show’s ability to deliver “addictively entertaining and provocative stories.”

Tulsa King gets a new season and an old boss

Paramount Plus has also made its move, formally renewing Tulsa King for a fourth season just before its season three premiere on September 21st. The biggest news, however, involves a change behind the scenes. Terence Winter, the show’s creator and original showrunner, is returning as head writer for season four. He replaces season three showrunner Dave Erickson, who is reportedly shifting his focus to another Taylor Sheridan series, Mayor of Kingstown.

The renewal was widely expected, as star Sylvester Stallone reportedly signed a new deal last year covering two more seasons. Sources told Deadline that talks are already underway for another two-year deal, which could extend the series to six seasons if viewership remains strong. The show’s second season premiere was reportedly Paramount Plus’s most-watched global premiere at the time.

Season three will introduce a new spinoff, NOLA King, starring Samuel L. Jackson, whose character will first appear as a guest star. According to Variety, Jackson will play a friend of Dwight’s (Stallone) who is inspired to build his own criminal organization in New Orleans.
